2017, encaustic painting, mixed media and wax, 130 x 182 x 44mm

Randal Arvilla builds his works through multiple layers of encaustic wax and collage; these come to form a singular solid surface, which project sculpturally from the wall. The seven works form part of a large series which Arvilla is currently developing. Each panel marks a lived year of Arvilla’s life, encapsulated as a remembered chapter within the small space. Arvilla plays on the ancient history of encaustic wax painting as a medium for portraiture, combining his formative artistic influences of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art and advertising to form an ongoing, segmented self-portrait.

Arvilla won the Painting Exhibition Award, St. Vincent’s Hospital & National Art School (2011). He has been a finalist in the Fleurieu Food and Wine Art Prize (2016), the Chippendale New World Art Prize (2016), Fisher’s Ghost Art Award (2015), Saint George Art Awards (2014, 2012) and the Waverley Art Prize (2012). Arvilla holds a B. Fine Art in Painting from the National Art School (2011) and a B. Graphic Design from the University of San Francisco (1989). His work is held in the permanent collection of the National Art School and in St. Vincent’s Hospital Art Collection, as well as private collections in the USA, UK, Costa Rica, Sweden and Australia.
