from Dureau's Ode to Memory series

Susie Dureau’s dreamlike paintings traverse the archives of the mind and offer glimpses of fugue-like reverie. Dureau plays with the early Renaissance tradition of female portraiture by painting her sitters in profile. They are lost in their inner worlds; their thoughts played out loosely in the skies. Each is a real woman, close to Dureau and portrayed lovingly here as the artist’s treasured memories, collected and kept close. The series is Dureau’s Ode to Memory, stretching Janus-like forward and back in time with the infinite reach of the sky.

Susie Dureau creates exquisite works through her masterful handling of paint. Dureau is classically trained, and studied oil painting at the Charlie Sheard School, and drawing at the Grant Macewan College in Edmonton, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Sydney. Dureau has been included in numerous group shows and has had a number of solo exhibitions, including Wild Histories at Suki and Hugh Gallery (2016) and This Must be the Place at Damien Minton Salon (2015). Dureau has been a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize (2016, 2014), the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize (2014) and the Paddington Art Prize (2013) among others. She has been awarded the Warringah Art Prize (2016), the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition EFA Press Release Prize, New York (2014), the Northbridge Art Prize (2011) and the Blackheath Art Society Prize (2010).
