2016, oil and wax on canvas board, 250 x 300mm

Thea Weiss travelled to the Riverina to discover images of the past and present, and meditate on the layered history of the region. She sought to understand the region through its landscape. Weiss’ oil and encaustic wax paintings each form their own landscape, capturing light reflections on the Murrumbidgee. Placed together the four works build a fluid, transforming vista of light reflected on water and an ever-shifting scene of layered history.

Weiss was the winner of the Sir William Dobell Foundation Award for Drawing 1, COFA UNSW (2012). She has worked on a number of projects exploring the Holocaust and memory, exhibiting these works at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum, Jerusalem (2016), New Zealand Portrait Gallery (2015), Sydney Jewish Museum (2012), and Virginia Holocaust Museum, USA (2010) amongst other sites. Weiss has been a finalist for the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, Museum of South Australia (2016, 2003), Portia Geach Memorial Award (2008) and Waverley Art Prize (2012, 2011, 2007).
