2017, embroidery and pencil on vintage linen, 75 x 75cm

Georgina Lee Stuart’s embroidery, drawings and paintings capture the patterns, textures and beauty of nature. Stuart offers up jewel-like specimens as she contemplates the history of entomological and botanical collecting. Delicately embroidered with fine, single threads, her butterflies and moths seem to have just landed on the vintage linen surfaces, and their painted cousins appear to hover on the rusted tin disks. Stuart’s insects recall their historical symbolism as joyful mementos to the transience of life and happiness in the moment. Elsewhere in her series of seaweed studies, Stuart captures the papery texture of dried seaweed through ink and acrylic. These fragile forms are drawn onto teabag papers, stitched and silk-like in a deft patchwork. Each of Stuart’s works invites contemplation and close looking; each asks your eye to follow the line of a single thread or mark, appreciate the natural patterns in the reclaimed materials and consider the delicate beauty of nature.

Georgina Lee Stuart works with a host of materials to embroider, paint and draw delicate and intricately detailed artworks. Stuart holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Sydney and studied millinery under the renowned Hatmaker after working in fashion design in London. She creates her works in her studio in Edith in regional NSW; often utilising antique, found and collected elements. Stuart has exhibited her beautifully rendered works in a number of group shows and recently presented a solo show Rare at Butcher’s Hook Gallery, Sydney (2015).
