2017, acrylic on canvas, 91 x 91cm

Kiata Mason’s still life scenes capture fleeting moments in time. Her works assemble groupings from her grandmother Bea’s collections, and form part of a larger body of work, as Mason aims to paint all of Bea’s cherished items. The grouped objects offer glimpses of the life lived around them, and a semblance of character and being. In the laid tables, there is a sense that each has just been set, or the feeling that the sitters have just stepped away. Freshly cut flowers and renderings of light and shadow hint at the slippage of time and make its transience palpable, as each work forms a joyful capsule of the moment.

Kiata Mason creates beautifully rendered painterly works. Classically trained at the National Art School, Sydney, Mason holds a Masters of Fine Arts (Drawing), a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting). Mason has exhibited widely, including a recent solo show Bea’s Table at St Cloche (2017). She has been a finalist in a number of prizes, including the Adelaide Perry Prize (2016), the Paddington Art Prize (2015), the Dobell Drawing Prize (2012) and the Mosman Art Prize (2012).
