2016, watercolour, gouache & monotype on paper, 205 x 285mm

Leah Bullen’s works explore sites which recreate the natural world ― public spaces which function to educate, but which are also ‘theatres of the real,’ providing approximated experiences. Using watercolour and gouache, Bullen paints onto a plastic sheet, then transfers the image onto paper with water and pressure in a monotype process; she then paints back into the image. This process allows for incident and the possibility of unknown outcomes. It is an attempt to highlight the visual adjustments we experience as moving bodies and the malleability of our experiences.

Bullen was the winner of the Wynne Trustees Watercolour Prize, Art Gallery of NSW (2016), the winner of the Winsor and Newton Start your Studio Art Scholarship (2016), she is a selected fnalist for the Bermingham National Watercolour Prize, QCA (2017) and was highly commended in the 2015 Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award, amongst other accolades. Bullen’s work is held in numerous collections, including the New England Regional Art Museum, Bundanon Trust Collection, ANU Collection, KPMG Collection and many private collections. Bullen holds a BA (Visual Arts) with First Class Honours from ANU and is currently a PhD candidate at the ANU School of Art.
